If you too feel like a stuffed turkey after the Holidays, you’re not alone. I don’t know why I’m surprised every year when the jeans get a little tighter at the start of January. Fear not, a few weeks of healthy eating will right that ship. Think before you order and get back on track with sushi.
Amber (3 locations) I am consistently impressed by the quality of sushi at Amber. Once you try one of their rolls, you’ll be hooked. They use a special rice from Japan with a slight nutty flavor, almost like brown rice, that gives the rolls an extra punch. The Ume Roll Combo ($20) is a nice way to sample a few standards and perfect to share. It includes crunchy spicy salmon, spicy tuna and spicy yellowtail chives rolls. The special rolls are like a small party in your mouth. Try the Pink Lady ($15) with
salmon, avocado, mango, asparagus and tobiko wrapped in pink soy paper. It melts in your mouth. Starting with Miso Soup ($3.50) is always a great way to start your meal with great flavor and low calories.
Kouzan Japanese (685 Amsterdam Avenue) Nestled on Amsterdam on the Upper West Side is this large modern sushi palace. Even in chilly weather, almost every table is taken. They offer four different three roll combos to share from $14.25 to $19.95. The Moon River Roll stuffed with salmon, avocado, peanuts topped with spicy tuna and green seaweed is such a nutty surprise ($15.25). Make your sweetie happy and order the Double Heart Roll with crunchy spicy yellowtail with tuna and ikura on the top ($14.25). The steamed shrimp dumpling ($6.50) is a lite way to start the evening.
Zest (249 Broome Street) This tiny gem attracts a crowd so get there early to secure your spot. They will text you when your table is ready and it is worth the wait. The fresh seafood tastes upscale but comes with a down home price. Every day from 4-7 p.m. save with discounted pricing on rolls and appetizers starting at $3.50. Lunch is also a home run with two roll specials $8 and three rolls $11. These combos come with soup and salad to fill you up. Basic rolls start at just $3 and specialty rolls $10. The menu is huge and includes hot dishes like pineapple fried rice, basil beef and curry chicken. Plan on visiting several times to really sample the menu.
