On Cinco de Mayo, what better way to celebrate the Mexican army’s victory over France than with margaritas. On Sunday, most Mexican eateries are offering great food, discounted drinks and free live entertainment.
Ghost Donkey (4 Bleecker Street) Ghost Donkey’s menu takes inspiration from the ingredients and flavors of Mexico, packaging them in a finger food format that matches the festive feel of the space. On Sunday, don’t miss their epic nacho eating contest and a donkey and hip hop mariachi band that are making an appearance. They will be offering a DIY Pork Taco Bar, special Altos Tequila, Montelobos Mezcal cocktails and Boozy paletitas from La Newyorkina. Also try the Mole Chicken Nachos with cheddar, red cabbage and jalapeño for $14. Their bar only serves tequila and mezcal in addition to beer and wine. The drinks are impressive with expertly crafted mixers and bitters, fresh fruits and an extensive tequila and mezcal selection. Reservations are only available for groups of ten or more.
Gabriela’s (688 Columbus Avenue) Gabriela’s advertises several rotating deals throughout the week. Happy Hour runs from 3-7 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the entire restaurant. Mondays pack extra motivation with specials lasting all night long. On Taco Tuesdays chow down on $4 Tacos (Al Pastor, Chicken, Carnitas, Veggie or Fish) and $4 Cervezas. On Wine Wednesday they highlight $5 glasses of red or white sangria or any house wine. Brunch this weekend includes one complimentary beverage. Try the Las Tortas Mexicanas sandwich with grilled seasonal vegetables, grilled skirt steak or chicken breast and refried bean spread, avocado and queso fresco for $18. Mariachi Bustamante will be on hand from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, keeping the fiesta going throughout the evening.
Agave (140 7th Ave South) There are many ways to save at Agave this weekend. Brunch from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. is $34.99 and includes two hours of unlimited agave margaritas, mimosas and wine. Keep track of your time because they will plus you can switch up your drink choices halfway through. Visit from 4- 7 p.m. for $6 margaritas, $6 house wines and $5 draft beers. Tacos and Empanadas will be $2. You can also choose to do family style prix-fixe meals with two or three courses that include Fajitas of Black Angus Skirt Steak Mezcal and Pescado Tacos Market Fish with mango pico, chipotle and Spanish rice. If the weather cooperates, sit on their cute patio outside.
