Don’t forget, Father’s Day is just around the corner. I find most men are easy to please with tasty grub and cocktails. Make a reservation at one of this week’s picks and instantly become the “favorite.” After all, it’s all about spending time together.
Dante (79-81 Macdougal Street) If the man in your life is a cocktail fanatic, check out Dante. They have been named number nine on the World’s Fifty Best Bars list. There are five pages of inventive drinks from dry to sweet including a Negroni Section, Dessert Drinks, Summertime Specials and Martini Hour favorites. Try the Bottled Cucumber and Elderflower Spritz made with Hendrick’s Gin ($14). The 1915 original Caffe Dante opened its doors in Greenwich Village in a mostly Italian neighborhood. There is a sense of nostalgia, of a time when immigrants gathered for an espresso, cocktail and solid meal. Today’s modern Italian menu boasts homemade Pappardelle all’Ragu with braised wild boar, pork and reggiano ($24) and Grain Fed Fillet Steak with broccolini and porcini butter ($27). Happy hour is from 3-6 p.m. where drinks are $10-$11.
Blue Smoke (4 locations) Seriously, what man doesn’t love barbecue? Blue will be offering their classic lunch menu with a few one-day-only specials for Father’s Day brunch. Try their famous Bright-Eyed Breakfast Sandwich with spicy fried chicken, pimento cheese, and a sunny-side-up egg all atop a biscuit donut. If visiting for dinner, all barbecue is served family style so you can sample many succulent meats. Don’t miss the Half Rack of Ribs ($21) and the Five Pepper Beef Brisket ($20/half pound). The ‘Cue Classis’ menu is $45 and includes Baby Back Ribs, Dry Rubbed Chicken, Smoked Sausage, Chopped Pork Shoulder, and Beef Brisket with Every Side, Pickles, Jalapeños and Biscuits. The ‘Smoke Show’ menu is $85 with All Pit Barbecue and Alabama White Wings with Every Side, Pickles, Jalapeños and Biscuits. This extravaganza includes a tour of their smokers and some spice rubs to take home. The entire table must participate and they are a no tipping restaurant.
