French February

Cafe du Soleil NYC French restaurant nyc 365 Guide New York City

As February comes to a close and warm weather gets a wee bit closer, consider a French meal to remind you of Springtime in Paris. The French seem to like prix-fixe menus giving us all the opportunity to eat upscale without breaking the bank.

Cafe du Soleil (2723 Broadway) Cafe du Soleil offers traditional French fare with the warm hospitality of a neighborhood café. It is a light filled space with huge brass mirrors, leather banquettes and modern bistro accents. They are known for their lively weekend brunch and daily prix-fixe menu. Everyday form 4-7 p.m. and all night Tuesday enjoy $5 wines, beer, cocktails and $6 small bites like Burgundy Snails at the bar. Platter specials for $14 include Mussels and a Black Angus Burger served with fries. They offer a large prix-fixe menu from 4-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and all day Sunday for $35. Get on their email list to get the inside scoop on prix-fixe deals that come with a bottle of wine. It can get crowded but the staff is unpretentious and do their best to find a spot for you.

Cafe Luxembourg NYC French restaurant 365 Guide New York CityCafe Luxembourg (200 West 70th Street) Luxemburg advertises a daily two-course prix-fixe dinner with your choice of appetizer and entree for $48.  Prix-fixe is served from 5-6:30 p.m. and from 10 p.m.-close. I recommend starting with the French Onion Soup or the Tuna Tartare. The bistro is reminiscent of old world Europen art-deco dining complete with a piano player. The lounge is a nice choice for a quiet date or a nightcap. It’s best to always have a reservation, even during brunch. It’s location to Lincoln Center make it a great selection before or after a show.
