Now that you’ve scoured both the French and Italian restaurants offering restaurant week savings, let’s dig into Mexican specialties. You have until August 18th to take advantage of $29 lunches and $42 dinners.
Rosa Mexicana (3 locations) Back in 1984, this restaurant helped lead the way by bringing a “new” type of upscale cuisine to New Yorkers. The chain’s outposts in Lincoln Center, Midtown East and on East 18th Street still serve up Mexican goodness in an authentic yet stylish and festive atmosphere. Every time I visit the food is consistently delicious. From 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday enjoy discounts on cocktails, sangria and beer at the bar (except Lincoln Center location). The Guacamole is made fresh to order and worth every calorie. Save room for the delightful avocado ice cream sundae for dessert.
Dos Caminos ( 4 locations) Another top notch New York City Mexican chain is Dos Caminos. Dos provides diners with a more modern take on Mexican staples in a high style dining room. You can even choose from a list of more than 100 types of tequila. Join them at any location for $4-$5 beers, $8 margaritas and $6 bocaditos (appetizers) in the bar and lounge area during the week from 3-6 p.m. and 9 p.m.-close. Sample a flight of the staffs favorite tequilas for only $10. The Guacamole is a personal size made fresh to order and the Taco Duo includes one slow roasted pork taco with serrano chile salsa and one grilled chicken taco with chile de arbol salsa.
Fonda (40 Avenue B) Fonda prides themselves on contemporary cuisine with deep roots in Mexico City. The tortillas are hand-pressed, the guacamole is made to order, and the margaritas are thoughtfully crafted. All of Fonda’s tortillas are made with 100% heirloom corn from family farms in Mexico. Try the Carne Asada in a sweet corn mushroom sauce for dinner. They offer specials every day of the week including all night happy hour on Mondays, $8 Taco Tuesdays and $8 Guacamole all night Thursday.
