Nothing is better than taking in a sweeping view of New York City. Especially during the summer, a different vantage point is a bit of a mini vacation. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how tall the city is until you take an elevator to the top floors. Treat yourself and your warm weather guests to Manhattan in the clouds.
Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel (145 East 5oth Street) On the penthouse floor of the Kimberly Hotel lives a sophisticated oasis for gourmet small plates and amazing views of midtown New York. This terrace is a swanky gem perfect for after work cocktails and very long lunches. The stunning rooftop bar and lounge sits thirty stories high and the tapas menu is designed for sharing. Try the portobello stack ($12) or the yellowfin tuna tartare ($18). At 3,000 square feet, the space consists of three separate indoor and outdoor atmospheres, an incredible view of the iconic Chrysler Building and a retractable roof for year round access.
Cantina Rooftop (605 West 48th Street) Cantina Rooftop is a hidden wellspring on the far west side that will instantly transport you to a Mexican taqueria. While the atmosphere is totally tropical, the retractable roof will keep you comfy all summer long. I would start with the trio of guacamole ($14) to sample the different creations. The tropical salsa with fresh fruit is absolutely delicious and screams of summer. Tuesday through Friday from 5-8 p.m. they offer daily food and drink specials. Margaritas are $8 and pitcher and beer bucket deals are available as well. Chef Gonzalo Colin traveled all through Mexico this past winter finding different spices to incorporate in his new menu. The gulf shrimp is charred in a mezcal flame and topped with fennel cilantro relish ($14). Meet your friends at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and prepare to spend the evening.
Haven Rooftop at The Sanctuary Hotel (132 West 47th Street) Located on top of the Sanctuary Hotel in the heart of Time Square, Haven Rooftop offers guests a chance to indulge in Manhattan’s stunning views while enjoying modern American cuisine, craft cocktails and cool music. Arrive early from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday for discounted $5 beer and $7 wine. The large menu includes a tower of tuna, sopressata pizza and filet mignon. Visit from 4-7 p.m. for a three course prix-fixe menu before your show or just to take advantage of the savings. If you’re rushed, you can even return after the show to finish your included dessert and take in that Times Square glow.
