Take-out has a whole new meaning during this challenging time. For the next several weeks I will be sharing my favorite places to order from. Take-out is not only helping our local bistros stay afloat but bringing home a sense of normalcy to our own kitchens. Italian restaurants know how to soothe your soul with garlic, pasta and tomatoes. Tonight, try these Italian restaurants happily offering fresh home-cooked meals.

Lucciola (621 Amsterdam Avenue) This trattoria reflects the nostalgic and romantic mood of Bologna embodying hospitality that makes you feel like family. They are offering several deals at this time that include a free bottle of wine. For $59 pick any two entrees, including steak and fish, plus a red or white wine of the day. If pasta is what you crave, pick two pasta dishes for $49. For singles, feast on any pasta dish with a bottle of wine for $25. Treat yourself and order their absolutely delicious Tiramisu and feel those worries melt away.

Polpette (71 West 71st Street) If you live on the Upper West Side you’ve probably heard about Nicky Meatballs. Nick Mormando’s meatballs are worth taking out in addition to homemade pasta and traditional Italian dishes. I highly suggest getting more than one order of meatballs (three each) so you’re not fighting over them during dinner. Every recipe reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking. I recommend the Chicken Marsala and any of their pasta in a pesto sauce. They are still serving fish, beef, veal, and a full bar to go.

Gennaro (665 Amsterdam Avenue) Gennaro offers truly authentic Italian food with quality ingredients at a fair price. This neighborhood gem attracts locals from all over Manhattan. The menu is large and all dishes are freshly prepared so be sure to call ahead if you want to pick up dinner. They too are selling bottles of wine to go to complete that Meditteranean experience. Sign up for their mailing list to receive the list of daily specials, yes, they still have specials. Whatever they are, pick one and enjoy it.
